“If They Reunite, We Will Be Happy”: Fadnavis on Possible Raj-Uddhav Thackeray Truce Ahead of BMC Polls

Maharashtra Dy CM Devendra Fadnavis welcomes talk of reconciliation between Raj and Uddhav Thackeray as Shiv Sena (UBT) signals readiness to move past differences for the sake of Marathi unity.

Mumbai, April 20: In a surprising turn of political tone, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday expressed optimism over the possibility of a reunion between estranged cousins Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray, calling it a “good development” if it materializes.

“If the two come together, we will be happy. If people settle their differences, it is a good thing. What more can I say?” Fadnavis told reporters, reacting to the latest signs of thaw between the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief and the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader.

🧩 A Reunion in the Making?

The speculation of a political rapprochement began after Raj Thackeray recently stated that he was open to mending ties with Uddhav, suggesting both leaders should move past their historical differences in the interest of Marathi pride and Maharashtra’s welfare.

Uddhav responded in kind, saying:

“I appeal to all Marathi people to come together for the benefit of Maharashtra and the Marathi language.”
He also pointed out that had Raj opposed the relocation of industries from Maharashtra to Gujarat during the previous Lok Sabha elections, “a different government might have existed today—one focused on Maharashtra’s welfare.”

🗣️ Political Conditions & Reservations

However, the path to reconciliation isn’t without conditions. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut confirmed that Uddhav is open to talks, but with one firm caveat:

“Raj Thackeray must not provide space to enemies of Maharashtra or those opposing Shiv Sena (UBT). If he agrees, the doors to dialogue are open.”

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske raised doubts about Uddhav’s sincerity, reminding the media of past tensions:

“Uddhav Thackeray had once threatened to leave home if any responsibility was given to Raj. He opposed Raj’s visits and distanced workers loyal to him. He must first explain those actions.”

🏙️ BMC Elections Loom Large

The timing of this possible reunion is significant. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, expected in October 2025, are seen as a prestige battle. A combined front of Uddhav and Raj could reshape the political equation in Mumbai, historically a Shiv Sena stronghold.

Political analysts suggest that a united Thackeray front could consolidate Marathi votes and challenge both the BJP and Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, altering the balance in Maharashtra’s urban politics.

🔄 Timeline of Rift

  • Raj Thackeray parted ways from the Shiv Sena in 2006 and formed the MNS, following internal disagreements over succession and leadership.
  • Uddhav took control of Shiv Sena and carried forward Balasaheb Thackeray’s political legacy.
  • Since then, the two cousins have rarely seen eye-to-eye, both ideologically and electorally.

However, with changing political dynamics and increasing calls for regional unity, the Thackeray cousins may finally be inching toward common ground.
