ICC Officially Invites Scotland to Replace Bangladesh in T20 World Cup 2026

DUBAI: In a historic and dramatic shift just weeks before the tournament begins, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has formally invited Scotland to replace Bangladesh in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. The decision follows a prolonged standoff between the ICC and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) regarding security concerns in India.

The Group C Shake-up

Scotland will now take Bangladesh’s spot in Group C, joining a competitive pool that includes:

  • England
  • West Indies
  • Italy
  • Nepal

Scotland’s campaign is set to kick off on February 7 against the West Indies. The ICC selected Scotland as the replacement based on their current T20I rankings (No. 14) and consistent performances in previous global events.

The Security Standoff

The crisis began when the BCB refused to travel to India for their group-stage matches (three in Kolkata and one in Mumbai). The board cited “genuine security risks,” reportedly triggered by an incident involving pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who was allegedly forced to leave the IPL under extremist pressure.

Despite the BCB’s request to move their matches to Sri Lanka, the ICC Board—convened by Chairman Jay Shah—voted to uphold the original schedule. The ICC stated that independent security assessments found no “credible or verifiable threat” to the Bangladesh team.

The Final Ultimatum

  • The 24-Hour Deadline: The ICC gave the BCB a final ultimatum earlier this week to confirm their participation.
  • Government Stance: The Bangladesh interim government, led by Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul, remained firm, stating the safety of their citizens was paramount and that they would not travel to India.
  • Last-Ditch Appeal: Bangladesh’s final attempt to refer the matter to the ICC Dispute Resolution Committee was unsuccessful, as the committee cannot act as an appeal forum for board decisions.

Financial and Sporting Impact

By withdrawing, Bangladesh stands to lose significant participation fees (estimated between $300,000 and $500,000), alongside potential prize money. For Scotland, the late invitation offers a massive opportunity to compete on the world stage after originally missing out during the qualifiers.
