A 38-year-old doctor from Andhra Pradesh, identified as Rohini, died by suicide at her apartment in Padma Rao Nagar, Hyderabad. Police investigators have suggested that the doctor had been battling depression, which was compounded by the recent rejection of her US visa application.
The tragic incident came to light on November 22 when her family members, alerted by her domestic help after she failed to open the door on Saturday morning, broke into the flat.
Struggle with Career Dreams
Rohini, who hailed from the Guntur district and was living alone, was reportedly deeply disappointed by the visa denial.
- Suicide Note: Police recovered a suicide note from the flat, which explicitly mentioned her struggle with depression and referenced the rejection of her US visa application as a source of distress.
- Family Confirms Distress: Rohini’s mother, Lakshmi, told media that her daughter had long harbored dreams of moving to the United States for work and had been “eagerly waiting” for her visa approval.
- Academic Background: Lakshmi highlighted her daughter’s academic brilliance, noting she completed her MBBS in Kyrgyzstan between 2005 and 2010 and had excellent records.
- Desire for US Practice: Despite her mother urging her to continue practicing medicine in India, Rohini was set on moving abroad, believing the US offered greater opportunities, including higher income and fewer patients per day.
Her mother added that the deepening disappointment in recent weeks had left Rohini “mentally exhausted and isolated.” The unmarried doctor had reportedly dedicated her life entirely to her medical career.
The police confirmed that the exact cause of death will be determined by the postmortem report, and her body has since been handed over to her family.
