The last Super 4s match of the Asia Cup 2025 between India and Sri Lanka was the most exciting one thus far. India won the Super Over at the Dubai International Stadium, which was a real nail-biter. This kept their winning streak going. But the exciting end was marred by a strange and contentious event that started a discussion about the laws of cricket.
The Weird “Dead Ball” Event
The Super Over was the most tense part of the game because the score was tied. There was a violent argument on the field after the fourth ball of Sri Lanka’s innings.
The Delivery: India’s fast bowler Arshdeep Singh threw a yorker that Sri Lanka’s skipper Dasun Shanaka missed.
The Run-Out: Shanaka quickly sought to sneak a single to give his partner the strike, but wicketkeeper Sanju Samson threw the ball so quickly that Shanaka was well short of his crease.
The Caught-Behind Appeal: Arshdeep Singh and Samson both asked for a caught-behind at the same time. Gazi Sohel, the umpire on the field, raised his finger and called Shanaka out.
The Review: According to cricket rules, the ball was “dead” as soon as the umpire raised his finger. Shanaka, on the other hand, chose to have a review right away.
The Reversal: The replays showed that the ball was nowhere near Shanaka’s bat, hence the caught-behind call was changed. But the umpire’s first call of “out” had already made the ball dead, thus Samson’s next run-out didn’t count. Shanaka was given a break and told he was “not out,” even though he was plainly out of his crease.
The Indian squad, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, was clearly perplexed and angry after this whole thing. The players went to the umpires to find out why they made such a strange decision. They were finally happy with the answer, which was based on a certain part of the MCC’s Laws of Cricket.
The Law Explained
According to MCC Law 20.1.1.3, “A batter is dismissed,” which is what the ruling was based on. The ball will be considered dead from the moment the incident that led to the dismissal happened.
The ball turned dead at that same moment since the umpire’s first caught-behind call was a “incident causing the dismissal.” Samson’s attempt to run out the ball was not valid because the ball had already been called dead.
The Result of the Match
The decision caused a lot of talk, but in the end it didn’t influence the outcome of the game. Arshdeep Singh, who was calm after the event, got rid of Shanaka on the very next ball. In their Super Over, Sri Lanka could only get two runs.
In response, India’s skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who had been the center of the on-field talk, hit a winning stroke on the very first ball of India’s Super Over to seal the victory and keep his side from losing in the tournament.
