Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], December 10: Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt took to Instagram to congratulate filmmaker Payal Kapadia on her groundbreaking Golden Globes nomination, marking a historic moment for India. “History is yours,” Alia wrote on her Instagram story, tagging Payal Kapadia, who has made history by becoming the first Indian to be nominated for Best Director (Motion Picture) at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards for her film All We Imagine As Light. The film also earned a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language.
The Golden Globe nominations were revealed on December 9 by Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut. All We Imagine As Light‘s recognition is a monumental achievement for Kapadia and Indian cinema on the global stage, placing the film alongside some of the year’s most celebrated international works.
Actor Rajkummar Rao also extended his best wishes to Kapadia via his Instagram, writing, “Congratulations @payalkapadiafilm! This is awesome. All the very best. Rooting for you.”
All We Imagine As Light tells the story of Prabha, a troubled nurse who receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, and Anu, her young roommate seeking intimacy with her boyfriend. Their journey to a beach town allows them to confront their emotions and desires. The film stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam in lead roles.
An Indo-French co-production between Petit Chaos (France) and Chalk & Cheese and Another Birth (India), the film had already made history earlier this year by winning the prestigious Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first Indian film in 30 years to be featured in the festival’s main competition section.
Before its Golden Globe nominations, All We Imagine As Light had already garnered significant international recognition, winning the Best International Feature trophy at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards and the Best International Feature at the 2024 Gotham Awards. These accolades have further solidified Payal Kapadia as one of the most promising directors in global cinema.
