Himachal Pradesh PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh addressed the media in Shimla today, detailing the state government’s proactive response to heavy snowfall that has disrupted road connectivity across the region.
Extensive Snow Clearance Operations
Singh revealed that over 350 roads were initially blocked due to heavy snowfall, with efforts underway to reopen 235 by tomorrow evening and the remaining within two days.
“Currently, 268 machines are deployed across snow-affected areas, including Dalhousie and Rohru. This includes 70 departmental JCBs, 96 hired machines, 13 advanced snow blowers, and 13 bulldozers,” he said, assuring that the government is prioritising smooth travel for locals and tourists during the festive season.
Snowfall: An Economic and Agricultural Boon
Emphasising the benefits of snowfall for the state’s economy, Singh highlighted its significance for horticulture and tourism.
“Snowfall provides essential moisture and natural fertilisation for crops, boosting productivity in horticulture, which contributes Rs 4,500 crores annually. Additionally, the scenic snowfall attracts tourists, offering a major boost to Himachal’s economy,” Singh explained.
He added that the state is fully prepared to welcome visitors to popular destinations like Shimla, Manali, and Dalhousie.
Administrative Preparedness and Strategic Projects
The minister announced that all leaves of field staff in snowbound areas have been cancelled, ensuring continuous snow clearance efforts.
Singh also provided updates on the Bhubhu Jot tunnel project, a strategic initiative that will reduce the travel distance between Manali and the China border by 50-60 kilometers. He noted ongoing discussions with Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Rajnath Singh regarding the project.
“Our focus remains on restoring connectivity swiftly and efficiently to ensure smooth movement for everyone,” he stated.
Looking Ahead
With the festive season coinciding with peak snowfall, Himachal Pradesh is poised to benefit from increased tourism and enhanced horticulture productivity. Singh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling snowfall-related challenges while maximising its economic potential.
