Himachal Pradesh Experiences Widespread Snowfall And Rain, Disrupting Daily Life

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], February 20: Himachal Pradesh has witnessed significant snowfall and rainfall in the past 24 hours, particularly affecting the higher-altitude regions. The districts of Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and Shimla, as well as the mountainous areas of Chamba, received fresh snowfall. Snowfall was also recorded in the Dhauladhar range of Kangra, the upper reaches of Mandi, and the Churdhar region in Sirmaur.

Popular tourist destinations in Shimla district, including Narkanda, Kufri, KharaPatthar, and Chopal, have been significantly impacted, disrupting normal life. Transportation has been affected in some areas, although essential services such as electricity and water supply remain unaffected.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) office in Shimla reported that the ongoing western disturbance caused this snowfall and precipitation. Kuldeep Srivastava, head of IMD Himachal Pradesh, stated that the highest snowfall in the state was recorded at 5.7 cm in Shilaru, Shimla district, while Baijnath in Kangra received the most rainfall at 9.7 mm. Snowfall and rain are expected to continue until the evening.

A noticeable drop of around 4°C has been recorded in temperatures across the region. However, no significant weather changes are anticipated in the Himalayan areas in the coming days. While scattered rainfall has been observed throughout the state, widespread precipitation has not been recorded yet. Temperatures are expected to dip slightly tomorrow, but the overall weather is likely to remain stable.

Srivastava also mentioned that another western disturbance is expected to affect Himachal Pradesh starting February 26, with its impact becoming more prominent on February 27. “The current precipitation deficit in Himachal Pradesh stands at -71 percent. While this snowfall provides some relief, a full recovery is unlikely. However, the upcoming western disturbance may help bridge the gap further,” he added.

As another round of snowfall is expected in higher altitudes, residents and travelers are advised to remain cautious, particularly in snow-prone areas. The administration is closely monitoring the situation to minimize disruptions to daily life.
