Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Sukhu Faces Controversy Over ‘Wild Chicken’ Dinner Allegations

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu has come under fire after reports emerged that ‘wild chicken’, a protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, was allegedly served at a dinner he attended.

Allegations and Clarifications

The controversy arose after an animal welfare organization shared a video claiming that wild chicken was on the dinner menu during an event in Kufri, Shimla. The BJP and animal rights groups have since criticized the Chief Minister, demanding accountability and action.

  1. CM Sukhu’s Response:
    • Sukhu clarified in a video released by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO):“Local villagers were offering me country (desi) chicken. I don’t consume it, yet a channel telecast this as if I was eating chicken. Non-veg food is a part of life in the hills. Jairam Thakur is making unnecessary statements on the matter.”
  2. The Dinner Menu:
    • The menu allegedly included:
      • Wild chicken (a protected species).
      • Bichu Booti (a local stinging nettle herb).
      • Maize and wheat bread.
    • Reports indicate that State Health Minister and other guests were served the wild chicken, though CM Sukhu denied consuming it.

Legal and Wildlife Concerns

The wild chicken, found in higher altitudes above 3,000 feet in Himachal Pradesh, is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Hunting or serving it is a punishable offense, leading to concerns over illegal hunting and environmental violations.

Reactions to the Controversy

  1. BJP’s Demands:
    • BJP spokesperson Chetan Bharta demanded:
      • A public apology from CM Sukhu.
      • Stringent action against those responsible for serving the wild chicken.
  2. Former CM Jairam Thakur:
    • Condemned the incident, calling it unacceptable.
    • Urged the government to swiftly investigate and address the allegations.
  3. Animal Rights Groups:
    • Animal welfare organizations have criticized the government, emphasizing the need to protect wildlife laws and prevent illegal hunting.

Social Media and Public Reaction

The controversy has sparked outrage on social media, with political leaders and environmental advocates demanding accountability. The incident highlights growing concerns about wildlife conservation and adherence to environmental laws in Himachal Pradesh.

While CM Sukhu has denied wrongdoing, the incident has intensified political attacks and brought the spotlight on the government’s stance on wildlife protection and governance accountability.
