Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], December 25: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu paid tribute to Bharat Ratna and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the occasion of his birth centenary.
While commemorating Vajpayee’s legacy, CM Sukhu highlighted the former Prime Minister’s deep connection with Himachal Pradesh and his significant contributions to the nation. “Atal Bihari Vajpayee had a long-standing and cherished bond with Himachal Pradesh. He frequently visited Preeni village and had a profound love for nature. As one of the founding members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he worked as a statesman throughout his political career,” Sukhu said.
The Chief Minister also emphasized Vajpayee’s pivotal role in strengthening the BJP and the RSS, noting his leadership in the early days of the party. “Under his guidance, the BJP secured victories for two MPs, helping solidify the party’s foundation. Despite political differences, Vajpayee Ji maintained a cordial relationship with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. His representation of India at the United Nations during the Congress-led government highlighted his commitment to the nation’s dignity,” Sukhu added.
Describing Vajpayee as a forthright leader, Sukhu continued, “He was clear in his approach, whether it was the 13-day government, the 13-month government, or his full term as Prime Minister. He always spoke his mind and worked tirelessly for the country. His contributions will remain etched in the hearts of every Indian.”
Following the tribute, CM Sukhu departed for Bengaluru to attend the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting. He shared details of his agenda, saying, “I am heading to Bengaluru for the Congress Working Committee meeting. Afterward, I plan to meet with Union Ministers and government officials to discuss federal issues impacting Himachal Pradesh. I will also attend the pre-budget meeting in January to raise key concerns related to our state.”
Sukhu stressed the state’s financial challenges, including the inadequate GST shares from Baddi, known as a pharma hub, and the withheld revenue deficit grants. “Since 2022, we have been deprived of approximately Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 crore in GST. Revenue deficit grants have been withheld, and our borrowing limits have been capped,” he explained.
Despite these financial challenges, the Chief Minister expressed hope that federal cooperation would help resolve these issues. “With the implementation of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), we have set a clear direction for the state. I’m pleased that our MLAs and cabinet members are united in these efforts. If financial support comes from the Centre, it will be a positive step forward. I will continue to advocate for these issues in the coming days,” Sukhu concluded.
