Himachal High Court Lawyers Protest Alleged Police Assault On Advocate, Demand Impartial Probe

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India]: A large group of Himachal Pradesh High Court lawyers staged a protest outside the Chhota Shimla Police Station (PS East) on Monday, demanding strict action against a police constable accused of physically assaulting a local advocate.

The lawyers alleged that the police refused to file a complaint against the accused constable and instead registered a counter-FIR with serious charges against the advocate, despite video evidence showing the assault.

“We don’t take to the streets unless it’s serious. This is about police insensitivity and abuse of power,” said Senior Advocate Sanjeev Bhushan, addressing the media.

Incident Details:

  • The alleged assault occurred a week ago, when a local lawyer contacted the police during a dispute.
  • Instead of assisting, a constable allegedly assaulted the advocate.
  • Video footage, reportedly filmed by bystanders, has surfaced on social media showing the constable beating the lawyer.
  • The police have been accused of spreading derogatory commentary online about the victim to protect their colleague.

Lawyers Demand:

  1. Immediate cancellation of the counter-FIR filed against the lawyer.
  2. Fair and impartial investigation against the police constable.
  3. Accountability for Chhota Shimla PS officials accused of biased handling.

“We are not making this about lawyers vs police. This is about truth, fairness, and public trust,” Bhushan clarified.

Call for Justice and Reform:

The legal community warned that unchecked misuse of authority could seriously damage public confidence in law enforcement.

“If this can happen to an advocate, imagine the plight of the common man,” Bhushan said, emphasizing the protest as a symbolic call for justice.

Next Steps:

Though no formal negotiation had begun at the time of the protest, senior police officials arrived on the scene, signaling potential dialogue. The lawyers expressed readiness to engage in talks and hoped for a constructive resolution.
