High Court Bail Application Filed For Bangladesh Hindu Leader Chinmoy Krishna Das In Sedition Case

Dhaka [Bangladesh]: Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmmachari, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatani Jagran Jote and a prominent Hindu leader, has applied for bail in the High Court in connection with a sedition charge involving alleged desecration of the national flag of Bangladesh.

According to Chinmoy’s lawyer, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee, the bail application was submitted on January 12 following the rejection of an earlier bail plea by a lower court in Chittagong on January 2. Bhattacharjee confirmed that the High Court hearing on the matter is expected to proceed on Monday.

Chinmoy Krishna Das, formerly associated with ISKCON, was arrested at Dhaka airport on November 25 last year. The Metropolitan Sessions Judge in Chittagong, Md Saiful Islam, denied bail during a hearing earlier this month, citing the seriousness of the charge.

During the proceedings, Chinmoy’s legal representative argued that his client had been falsely accused. “Chinmoy respects the motherland like his own mother. The flag alleged to have been desecrated was not the Bangladeshi flag. Furthermore, sedition charges require state approval, which was not sought in this case,” said Bhattacharjee.

The case has drawn significant attention, both domestically and internationally, particularly among Hindu and minority rights organizations. In November, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed concern over Chinmoy’s arrest and the refusal of bail. The MEA cited the broader context of attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh, including documented incidents of vandalism, arson, and theft targeting Hindu homes, businesses, temples, and deities.

“It is unfortunate that while perpetrators of violence against minorities remain at large, charges have been pressed against a religious leader advocating peacefully for legitimate demands,” the MEA stated. The ministry also urged Bangladeshi authorities to uphold the safety, security, and freedom of expression for all minorities, including their right to peaceful assembly.

Chinmoy’s arrest has sparked protests among Hindu communities in Bangladesh, with demands for his release and stronger action against those responsible for attacks on minorities. The case has underscored the challenges faced by minority groups in Bangladesh, calling attention to their safety, rights, and representation.

The High Court decision on Chinmoy Krishna Das’s bail application will be closely watched, as it may set a precedent for similar cases involving religious leaders and minority rights activists in the country.
