Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 22: Incessant heavy rainfall has led to widespread waterlogging and severe disruption of public life in Guwahati, Assam, as the state continues to grapple with intense monsoon downpours.
Earlier in June, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had advised residents in low-lying and riverbank areas to remain vigilant, noting that several regions had received over 30 cm of rainfall. Silchar recorded 42 cm, Hailakandi 30 cm, and Karimganj 35 cm. The Chief Minister had urged people to stay safe and follow local advisories. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has also launched Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief missions in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to assist stranded individuals. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is scheduled to visit flood-affected districts in Assam soon to assess the situation and provide relief.
The current weather in Guwahati is 33°C and partly cloudy, with rain expected throughout the day. Humidity makes it feel like 43°C.
Situation in Other States:
- Jammu and Kashmir: A flood-like situation has emerged in Rajouri district, where the Dharhali and Saktoh rivers have witnessed a significant rise in water levels due to continuous rainfall. As a precautionary measure, the Rajouri District Administration ordered the closure of all government and private schools across the district for today. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as waterlogging disrupts normal life in low-lying areas. A massive landslide has also blocked the Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch highway.
- Himachal Pradesh: Public life in Himachal Pradesh remains severely affected by persistent monsoon rains. As per the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC)’s report on July 20, 142 roads are blocked, 40 water supply schemes disrupted, and 26 power distribution transformers (DTRs) are out of service. Since the onset of monsoon on June 20, the state has recorded 166 deaths, including 132 due to rain-related incidents and 34 from road accidents. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) is continuously monitoring and coordinating relief and restoration efforts. Latest reports on July 22 indicate 468 roads blocked, 676 water supply schemes disrupted, and 1,199 DTRs non-functional, with the death toll climbing to 125 since June 20. Two individuals were killed in a rain-triggered landslide in Chamba district on Monday.
