Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], May 19: Torrential rainfall over the past 24 hours has led to severe waterlogging across Bengaluru, throwing daily life into disarray. In response, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar expressed concern over the situation and assured citizens of swift and sustained action.
“I am deeply concerned by the havoc caused by relentless rains in Bengaluru… I remain committed to Bengaluru—working round the clock to address challenges and ensure relief,” he tweeted.
However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was quick to criticize the government’s preparedness and response. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya targeted Shivakumar on social media, questioning the government’s priorities and pace of progress.
“I appreciate your honesty in admitting decades of neglect of civic infrastructure… At least now, will you forego your tunnel road fantasy and concentrate on basics?” he tweeted.
Surya also noted that over two years have passed since Shivakumar took charge, urging for real and visible change rather than continued excuses.
Despite political attacks, DK Shivakumar has reaffirmed his commitment to long-term solutions for the city’s recurring flooding problems.
“I will be visiting the BBMP War Room and flood-affected areas personally to take stock on the ground,” he wrote.
The intense overnight rainfall has left several areas submerged, with roads underwater, traffic at a standstill, and trees uprooted. In some severely hit localities, boats were seen being used for rescue and transportation.
Citizens have voiced their frustration over the city’s inadequate drainage infrastructure. Bengaluru resident Mohamed Jaullah shared,
“It’s been raining since 3 AM. My house and office are waterlogged. It’s causing immense trouble. Daily work is affected. I urge the government to resolve this issue quickly.”
Rescue operations are underway, with Karnataka police helping stranded individuals. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka, warning of more rainfall over the next two days.
