Patna, Bihar / New Delhi, India – July 28, 2025 – Heavy rainfall swept across parts of Patna on Monday, leading to significant waterlogging in numerous areas, including the unexpected inundation of the Bihar Legislative Assembly premises. The relentless downpour also caused severe waterlogging in low-lying parts of the city and at Patna Railway Station, disrupting daily life.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its latest update issued on Monday, confirmed that very heavy rainfall was recorded in the Nawada district over the last 24 hours. Heavy rainfall also lashed Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Patna itself, Vaishali, Begusarai, and Munger, while light to moderate rainfall was observed in many other parts of Bihar. The weather department has further predicted ‘Very Heavy’ rainfall at a few places in Patna, Nawada, Nalanda, Rohtas, Buxar, and Kaimur districts of the state for July 28-29, indicating continued challenging weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the eastern state of Odisha is grappling with severe flooding in its Jajpur district, triggered by the rising waters of the Baitarani river due to incessant rainfall. An official report indicates that nearly 600 people and 150 households across four villages have been affected by the floods.
The Jajpur district administration has swiftly responded, evacuating residents from the inundated villages located in the Dashrathpur and Jajpur blocks. Extensive rescue and relief operations are underway to assist the affected population. Additional District Magistrate Sibanand Swain provided an update, assuring that the situation is currently under control as the water level of the Baitarani river is gradually receding. Importantly, no loss of life has been reported.
“The water level has risen, but now the situation is under control. Four villages have been affected, nearly 600 people covering 150 households. We have evacuated them and provided them with food,” ADM Sibanand Swain told ANI. He added, “The water level is receding. No casualties have been reported.”
The Jajpur district administration had issued a flood warning on Saturday after the Baitarani river had crossed its danger mark at Akhuapada, prompting pre-emptive measures to mitigate the impact of the rising waters. Both Bihar and Odisha are experiencing the intensified effects of the monsoon season, leading to significant challenges for local administrations and residents.
