Heavy Rains Lash Mumbai, IMD Issues Yellow Alert For City And Thane; Red Alert Continues For Other States

Mumbai, Maharashtra – July 27, 2025 – Parts of Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall on Sunday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a ‘yellow alert’ for the financial capital of Maharashtra, indicating a forecast of “generally cloudy sky with heavy rain.” This comes after a day of continuous downpour across the city and its suburbs on Saturday.

The IMD’s ‘yellow alert’ extends to Palghar and Thane districts in Maharashtra for Sunday, while a more severe ‘orange alert’ has been issued for Raigad district, signifying a higher likelihood of very heavy rainfall.

Mumbai witnessed significant rainfall on Saturday as well. According to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai City recorded an average of 6.80 mm of rainfall from 8 AM to 10 PM. The eastern suburbs received 11.53 mm, and the western suburbs recorded 7.42 mm during the same period. On Saturday, Palghar district was under a ‘red alert’ for extremely heavy rainfall, while Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad were under an ‘orange alert’.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has caused disruptions in other parts of the country. In Madhya Pradesh, the Jogitikariya bridge on the Dindori to Jabalpur route was submerged on Saturday night due to the overflowing Narmada River. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team was present at the location to manage the situation. Satish Dwivedi, Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Dindori, confirmed that traffic from both sides of the bridge had been diverted due to the rising water levels. “The Narmada River is in spate. The river is flowing over the Jogitikariya bridge. Traffic from both sides has been diverted… Adequate security arrangements have been made here. Police, Home Guard, and SDRF teams are deployed,” Dwivedi told ANI.

The India Meteorological Department had previously issued a ‘red alert’ for Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Goa on Saturday, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in these regions. The IMD explained that a depression over east Madhya Pradesh and north Chhattisgarh had moved westwards at a speed of 12 kmph during the preceding six hours. As of 11:30 PM IST on Saturday, July 26, the depression was centered near Latitude 23.3°N and Longitude 81.0°E, approximately 30 km south-southeast of Umaria (Madhya Pradesh), 110 km east of Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh), and 170 km east-southeast of Damoh (Madhya Pradesh). The IMD’s forecast indicated that this system was very likely to continue moving westwards across Madhya Pradesh and gradually weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area by Sunday, July 27, 2025.

Specific districts under a ‘red alert’ include North Seoni, Mandla/Kanha, South Khandwa, and South Khargone in Madhya Pradesh, as well as Nanded, Parbhani, and Hingoli in interior Maharashtra. These areas are expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall, with a high probability of cloud-to-ground lightning activity.

Furthermore, an ‘orange alert’ for moderate rainfall and potential cloud-to-ground lightning has been issued for parts of east Madhya Pradesh, east Rajasthan, south Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, south Kerala, south Chhattisgarh, southeast Uttar Pradesh (Kanpur), south Punjab, south Haryana, and Gangetic West Bengal.

IMD color-coded alerts serve as warnings to the public:

  • Yellow Alert: Indicates heavy rainfall, urging residents to stay updated with weather conditions and “be aware.”
  • Orange Alert: Signals very heavy rain, prompting a need for preparedness and “be prepared.”
  • Red Alert: Represents extremely heavy rainfall, requiring emergency action and “take action” immediately due to significant threats to life and property.

Authorities continue to advise residents in affected areas to take necessary precautions, monitor official weather advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
