New Delhi [India]: Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds hit the national capital in the early hours of Friday, leading to widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls, and flight delays at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert for severe weather across Delhi-NCR, urging residents to remain cautious and avoid venturing out unless necessary.
Flight Operations Affected
The Delhi Airport authority released an advisory via X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“Due to inclement weather conditions and thunderstorms in Delhi, some flights have been impacted at Delhi Airport. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information.”
Waterlogging and Traffic Woes
Heavy showers led to knee-deep water accumulation in several low-lying areas including Khanpur and Connaught Place flyover, where commuters reported traffic disruptions and minor accidents.
At DDU Marg, Mukesh, a commuter en route to Laxmi Nagar, said:
“The rain has brought relief from the heat, but now I’m late for work. There was a traffic snarl and even an accident here. Waterlogging is worse near the Connaught Place flyover.”
Somvir, another commuter near Minto Bridge, said:
“There is waterlogging at the underpass. Bikes and autos are breaking down. We had to turn back.”
Trees Uprooted, Roads Blocked
In RK Puram’s Major Somnath Marg, visuals showed uprooted trees blocking the road, further exacerbating the traffic situation. School children and office-goers were seen struggling to navigate the flooded streets and access public transport.
IMD Alert and Forecast
The IMD confirmed the ongoing severe weather activity, attributing it to a western disturbance influencing weather patterns over North India. The department has advised residents to take safety precautions, avoid waterlogged areas, and monitor official updates for further developments.
Conclusion
While the rain has brought a much-needed respite from the scorching summer heat, the lack of adequate drainage and infrastructure continues to pose a major challenge in the national capital during heavy rainfall.
