Heavy Rains Lash Bhopal, Severe Waterlogging Hits City As IMD Warns Of More Downpours

Bhopal, July 2, 2025: Heavy rainfall pounded Bhopal on Wednesday, leading to severe waterlogging in multiple areas across the Madhya Pradesh capital. Visuals from the city showed vehicles struggling through submerged roads, causing widespread traffic disruptions and inconveniencing commuters.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a “partly cloudy sky with a possibility of rain, thunderstorm, or dust storm” for the city in the coming hours. This follows a warning issued by the IMD on Tuesday for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

According to the IMD’s press release, active monsoon conditions are expected to persist over large swathes of northwest, central, and eastern India for the next 6-7 days. Extremely heavy rainfall—defined as 20 cm or more—is likely at isolated spots over Madhya Pradesh, western Uttar Pradesh, and eastern Rajasthan today.

The IMD noted that Himachal Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, and West Madhya Pradesh have already recorded heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, states such as Odisha, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, East Rajasthan, Madhya Maharashtra, and parts of Gujarat and Assam are witnessing significant rain activity.

Thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching speeds of 60-90 kmph are expected at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh and Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Gusts of 40-60 kmph are likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and other regions.

Meanwhile, Bhopal’s struggles with waterlogging are not new. On June 26, heavy downpours led to severe flooding near Alpana Tiraha and Bhopal railway station platform number 6, causing commuters major difficulties. Passengers had to rely on auto rickshaws and e-rickshaws to navigate submerged streets, with drivers charging Rs 10 per passenger to ferry people across flooded roads.

E-rickshaw driver Anas Khan shared, “We are charging Rs 10 to cross the submerged street to the railway station. It rained heavily, and passengers are happily paying for the service.”

Passenger Mahesh Kukreja described the situation as chaotic, adding, “The area is filled with water, and there is no drainage. We are forced to take autos as there’s no other way to reach the station.”

With the IMD forecasting more rain in the coming days, authorities and residents alike remain on high alert.
