Heavy Rains Cripple Himachal: 269 Roads Blocked, 75 Dead As Monsoon Fury Intensifies

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), July 6: Relentless monsoon rains have wreaked havoc across Himachal Pradesh, blocking 269 roads, disrupting 285 electricity transformers, and rendering 278 water supply schemes non-functional in just 24 hours, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).

Mandi district has been worst hit, with 200 roads blocked and the highest number of power and water supply disruptions reported. Kullu followed with 39 blocked roads in subdivisions like Banjar and Nirmand, while Chamba recorded 32 road blockages and 17 damaged transformers.

“The heavy monsoon showers have triggered landslides, waterlogging, and extensive infrastructure damage, severely affecting connectivity and essential services,” stated the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). Restoration efforts are underway, with teams on high alert in critically affected regions like Mandi and Kullu.

Shimla, Solan, and Lahaul & Spiti have reported minimal impact so far, but authorities warned that continued rainfall could worsen conditions.

Citizens have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in landslide-prone areas. Departments of Public Works, Electricity, and Jal Shakti are mobilized for urgent repairs, and the 24×7 helpline (1070) remains active to coordinate relief efforts.

Meanwhile, the monsoon’s cumulative toll has climbed to 75 deaths statewide—45 from rain-related disasters and 30 from accidents, including road mishaps, electrocution, and a gas explosion, underscoring the deadly intensity of the ongoing rains.
