NEW DELHI – Heavy rain overnight caused a lot of damage and problems all throughout Delhi on Saturday. A road near a metro construction site fell apart, while a wall fell apart in a different area, killing seven people. The heavy rain also generated a lot of flooding, which made it hard for cars and planes to get about the city.
A wall at a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) site that was being built fell down, causing part of the road under the Masoodpur overpass to sink in in Vasant Kunj. The event, which happened close to the D-6 area, led officials to quickly restrict the road from Fortis Hospital to Mahipalpur. The Delhi Traffic Police has told people who are traveling to take Aruna Asaf Ali Marg instead.
Anuj Dayal, the Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communication at DMRC, said that no one was hurt in the event and that barricades were set up as a safety measure. He said that work to restore the site had already started.
In Jaitpur, on the other hand, a wall near Mohan Baba Mandir fell down because of the severe rain, killing seven people. Police said that seven of the eight persons who were pulled from the rubble died from their injuries. Three men, two women, and two young children were among the dead. The only person who lived, a 27-year-old guy from West Bengal, is now getting care at the trauma unit at Safdarjung Hospital. The Delhi Fire Service and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) searched the area thoroughly and established that no one else was trapped. Officials are looking into what caused the collapse, but they think that the rain may have made the soil weaker and caused water to build up.
The heavy rain also made it hard for people to go around. The airport in Delhi told passengers that bad weather and flooding around the airport could create delays. The advise told travelers to plan their trips carefully and think about taking the Delhi Metro to make sure they get to their flights on time.
