Thunderstorms batter Delhi with over 80 mm of rain; widespread waterlogging and power disruptions reported across the city
New Delhi [India], May 25: Heavy rain and powerful thunderstorms in the national capital wreaked havoc on Saturday night, forcing 49 flights—including 17 international—to divert from Delhi Airport between 11:30 pm and 4 am. Normal flight operations were restored early on Sunday morning, as confirmed by airport sources.
“Due to adverse weather conditions in Delhi, 49 flights were diverted between 11:30 pm and 4 am. Normal services have now been restored,” an airport source stated.
Issuing an advisory at 6:50 am on Sunday, Delhi Airport advised passengers to check their flight status and stay in touch with airlines. “Due to adverse weather conditions last night, some flights have been impacted. Our on-ground teams are working diligently to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience,” the advisory read on X.

The overnight deluge saw temperatures plummet by 8-10°C across the city—from 31°C to 22°C in Lodhi Road and from 31.0°C to 21.0°C at Safdarjung Airport. The Pusa station recorded a sharp drop from 31.8°C to 20.5°C, while Pragati Maidan went from 31.4°C to 21.3°C.
The rainfall totals over the past 24 hours highlight the intensity of the storm: Lodhi Road recorded 69.6 mm, Aya Nagar 37.0 mm, Safdarjung 81.4 mm, Palam 68.5 mm, and Ridge 69.1 mm, according to IMD data.
The downpour triggered severe waterlogging in several parts of the city, with visuals from Minto Road showing submerged vehicles. Moti Bagh, Dhaula Kuan, and areas near Delhi Airport Terminal 1 reported waterlogging, while fallen trees at Akbar Road disrupted traffic. Nanakpura Underpass also saw severe flooding.
The heavy rain also lashed Haryana’s Jhajjar district, compounding the regional impact.
On Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for Delhi and surrounding areas, warning of strong thunderstorms, rain, and gusty winds of 40-60 km/h. Residents were urged to avoid open spaces, shelter under trees, or weak structures.
The storm’s effects included uprooted trees, damaged crops like bananas and papayas, and potential dust storms in some parts of the city. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and take precautions to stay safe.
