Health Minister JP Nadda Launches National Mass Drug Administration Round For Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination

New Delhi, February 10 : Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nadda, on Monday, launched the National Mass Drug Administration (MDA) Round aimed at eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) across 13 states in India. This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing effort to combat LF, also known as elephantiasis, and protect millions from this debilitating disease.

Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis

Speaking at the launch, Nadda reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis, which is primarily caused by the bite of the Culex mosquito. He highlighted the progress made so far, saying, “We have reached very close to eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis.”

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is pushing to achieve the elimination of the disease well ahead of the Sustainable Development Goal target of 2030. The new revised target has been set for 2027.

Five-Pronged Strategy for Elimination

Nadda emphasized the need for a five-pronged strategy to accelerate the elimination of LF. “I want to assure the States that all technical and financial support will be provided by the government of India,” he said, urging states to implement this strategy rigorously.

One of the key components of the strategy is the Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaign, which is conducted twice a year across 111 districts in 13 states. Nadda stressed that no one should be left out during the MDA campaign, as it plays a pivotal role in reducing the incidence of LF.

State-Level Monitoring and Political Involvement

The Minister called on states and union territories to monitor the MDA campaign closely to ensure the early diagnosis of affected individuals. He also emphasized the importance of personal involvement by political and administrative leadership at the state and district levels for the success of the initiative.

“We have to engage digital platforms for wider reach,” said Nadda, praising states like Uttar Pradesh and Odisha for their successful initiatives in combating LF. Additionally, he suggested utilizing self-help groups to aid in the distribution of medicines during the MDA campaign and urged the involvement of MPs, MLAs, and panchayats to strengthen the efforts.

IEC Activities for Awareness

Nadda also called for effective IEC (Information, Education, Communication) activities to raise awareness about LF and the MDA campaign among the public. He stressed that political involvement is crucial for the success of this mass public health initiative.

Conclusion

This push for the elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis is a significant step in India’s efforts to improve public health and ensure a disease-free future for millions. The government has vowed to provide comprehensive support to states, ensuring the implementation of strategies to fight LF.
