Harshit Rana Responds To Favouritism Allegations, Says He Trusts His Hard Work

India pacer Harshit Rana has found himself at the centre of heated discussions, with critics alleging that he has been favoured by India head coach Gautam Gambhir. However, the 23-year-old fast bowler insists he does not let such opinions affect him, as dwelling on outside noise would only hinder his ability to play freely.

Rana, who made his India debut across formats under Gambhir’s tenure—beginning with the Perth Test during last year’s Australia tour—has not yet produced major match-winning performances. But he continues to receive strong backing from the head coach, which has triggered debate among sections of fans.

Speaking ahead of India’s training session at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium, Rana addressed the criticism directly.

“If I start listening to all these things, put them in my mind and take the field, I won’t be able to play cricket,” he said.

“I try to avoid as much as possible. I only pay attention to what I have to do on the ground. I don’t care what’s happening outside or what people say about me. I focus on my hard work and my performance.”

Working With Morne Morkel and Arshdeep Singh

Rana, who picked 3/65 in the Ranchi ODI and played a crucial role with two early wickets despite losing control in the latter stages of South Africa’s chase, revealed he has been working intensely on his new-ball skills.

He shared that India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel and fellow pacer Arshdeep Singh have been instrumental in his development.

“With the new ball, I am practising a lot with Morne. I keep talking to Arshdeep because he is very experienced. He helps and guides me during practice,” Rana said.

One-Ball Rule Strategy After 34 Overs

Rana also spoke about the tactical approach India uses under the one-ball rule after the 34th over.

“Bowlers don’t get much help in modern cricket, so this rule benefits us. We always keep an eye on which of the two balls is ageing faster, and everyone is involved in choosing the right ball.”

Guidance From Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

The young pacer said sharing the dressing room with icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has had a significant impact on his growth.

“It’s a big deal for me and for the entire team. When such experienced players are with you on the field and in the dressing room, the environment becomes very positive,” he said.

“Even just being in the dressing room with them creates a very happy atmosphere.”

Meanwhile, India’s jersey for the T20 World Cup is set to be unveiled during the mid-innings break of the match here.
