London [UK], April 7: England’s dynamic young batter Harry Brook has been named the new white-ball captain for the national side following Jos Buttler’s resignation in the wake of a disappointing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) made the official announcement on Monday, highlighting Brook’s growing influence in the team since making his white-ball debut in 2022. The 25-year-old has already served as vice-captain in both ODIs and T20Is, and captained England in Buttler’s absence during the Australia series last September, where he earned praise for his leadership and on-field performances.
Brook was England’s leading run-scorer in that tightly contested five-match series, amassing 312 runs at an average of 78 and a strike rate exceeding 127, including a century and two fifties. His calm demeanor and tactical acumen made a strong case for his long-term leadership potential.
Speaking on his appointment, Brook said:
“It is a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me.”
“There is so much talent in this country, and I am looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events. I am excited to get going and give it everything I have got.”
Brook also acknowledged the role of his family and coaches in shaping his journey, thanking them for their constant support and belief.
This isn’t Brook’s first leadership role — he previously captained England U19s in the 2018 U19 World Cup, scoring 239 runs in five matches. England finished seventh in that tournament, but Brook’s standout performances marked him as a future star.
Meanwhile, Jos Buttler steps down after a mixed tenure that began on a high with England’s victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, his captaincy was marred by underwhelming ICC tournament results thereafter, including a seventh-place finish at the 2023 ODI World Cup and a semi-final exit at the 2024 T20 World Cup.
England’s poor run in the Champions Trophy 2025 and a white-ball tour of India — where they won only one of 11 matches — led to intense scrutiny and ultimately Buttler’s decision to resign. Despite stepping down as captain, Buttler has confirmed he will continue playing across all formats.
Brook’s first major challenge as full-time captain will come at home against West Indies, with a three-match ODI and T20I series beginning on May 29, followed by a white-ball series against South Africa in September.
