Hardeep Singh Puri Criticizes Sonia Gandhi’s Remarks On President Murmu, Calls It “Reflective Of Poor Leadership”

New Delhi [India]: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday strongly criticized Congress leader Sonia Gandhi over her remarks on President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint sitting of Parliament, stating that such comments reflect poorly on the opposition’s leadership.

Referring to the President’s speech, Sonia Gandhi had remarked, “The President was getting very tired by the end… she could hardly speak, poor thing.”

Puri, the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, took exception to her statement, emphasizing that such comments were directed at the country’s first tribal President.

“She is the first tribal President… She (President Murmu) gave a report card on behalf of the government. If you have objections to it, there will be a discussion, and then you can counter it. His (Rahul Gandhi’s) mother (Sonia Gandhi) says ‘tired’—what kind of words are these?” Puri questioned.

“The son and mother, who are desperately fighting for political relevance… I am appalled that on an occasion with such solemnity, they go and make statements like this. It reflects very poorly on them,” he added.

Several BJP leaders have strongly condemned Sonia Gandhi’s remarks.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju demanded an apology from Congress, asserting that the comments were inappropriate.

“I condemn the comments made by Sonia Gandhi and other opposition leaders. Our President, a tribal woman, is not weak… Droupadi Murmu has worked extensively for the country and society, and they cannot even imagine the kind of work she has done… They should apologize to her,” Rijiju said.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hit back at the BJP, accusing them of twisting her mother’s words for political gain.

“My mother is a 70-80-year-old lady. She simply said that ‘the President read such a long speech, she must have been tired, poor thing’… She fully respects the President of India. I think it is very unfortunate that this kind of thing is twisted by the media. They both are two respected people and older than us… She means no disrespect. BJP should first apologize for pushing the country into a gorge,” Priyanka Gandhi stated.

The Budget Session of Parliament began on Friday with President Murmu addressing the joint sitting of both Houses. The Union Budget is set to be presented tomorrow.
