The 36-hour nirjala fast (without water) that devotees practice is one of the most important parts of this event. It shows how strong their faith and endurance are. People give gifts to both the setting and the rising sun as a way to show thanks and hope.
During the four days, there are ceremonies like:
Nahay Khay (Day 1): People who follow this religion take a holy bath and eat only one vegetarian meal that is cooked with the highest level of cleanliness.
Kharna (Day 2): A day of fasting from sunrise to sunset, which ends with making chapati and jaggery kheer.
Sandhya Arghya (Day 3): People give “Arghya” to the setting sun by putting fruits, sugarcane, and thekua in bamboo baskets.
Usha Arghya or Parana Day (Day 4): The last ceremony, when prayers are said to the rising sun, marks the completion of the fast.
