Hamas Confirms Death Of Military Leader Mohammed Deif In Israeli Strike

Hamas has confirmed the death of its military leader Mohammed Deif in an Israeli strike, months after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced his killing, Times of Israel reported on Thursday.

Hamas Confirms Key Commanders Killed

In a video statement, Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida confirmed the deaths of several top military figures, including:

  • Mohammed Deif, Hamas’ military leader
  • Ghazi Abu Tama’a, deputy commander of Hamas’s military wing
  • Raad Thabet, head of combat support
  • Rafa’a Salameh, commander of the Khan Younis Brigade
  • Ayman Nofal, commander of the Central Gaza Brigade
  • Ahmed Ghandour, commander of the Northern Gaza Brigade

Israel Confirms Deif’s Death

The IDF also confirmed Deif’s elimination in a post on X, stating:

“We can now confirm: Mohammed Deif was eliminated.”

The Israeli military said it received intelligence confirming his death, which occurred during a July 13 airstrike targeting Hamas’ Khan Younis Brigade commander Rafa’a Salameh’s compound.

Recent Hostage and Prisoner Releases

This development follows Israel’s release of 110 Palestinian prisoners after receiving security assurances from mediators regarding the ongoing ceasefire-hostage deal.

According to Al Jazeera, Israel released the prisoners after securing the release of three Israeli hostages—one male and two female—and five Thai nationals.

Earlier, Israel had delayed the prisoner release, stating that it would only proceed if the “safe passage” of remaining hostages was guaranteed. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office emphasized:

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, together with Defense Minister Israel Katz, has ordered that the release of the terrorists slated to be released today be delayed until the safe exit of our hostages in the next phases is assured. Israel demands that the mediators see to this.”

Context of the Conflict

The Israel-Hamas war erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel, killing over 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting more than 200 others.

In response, Israel launched a counter-offensive in Gaza, where over 46,000 Palestinians have been killed.
