In a big step forward for diplomacy, Hamas has agreed to accept certain key parts of the Gaza peace proposal that US President Donald Trump put up. The move made President Trump make an extraordinary request for Israel to “immediately stop bombing on Gaza” so that hostages might be released safely and quickly.
Hamas’s decision, which Trump announced on his Truth Social account, includes the important promise to free all of the hostages taken during the October 7 strikes and to start talks on a larger prisoner swap.
Hamas Agrees to Give Up Control and Exchange Hostages
Hamas has changed its mind on both the detainees and the future government of the Gaza Strip, saying it has a “national responsibility” and wants to stop the “aggression and genocide” there.
The group said its:
According to the exchange formula in President Trump’s proposal, all occupied detainees, whether living and dead, should be released. It said it was ready to “immediately enter, through the mediators, into negotiations to discuss the details.”
Approval to give control of the Gaza Strip to a Palestinian group of “independents (technocrats)” based on a Palestinian national consensus and backed by Arab and Islamic support.
Hamas also officially thanked many groups for their work to end the war, help the Palestinians, and stop the occupation or displacement of the Palestinian people. These groups included “Arab, Islamic, and international efforts, as well as the efforts of US President Donald Trump.”
Trump Calls for a Ceasefire Right Away
After Hamas made its speech, President Trump wrote on social media that he thought they were “ready for a lasting PEACE.”
He then gave the Israeli government a direct and immediate order: “Stop bombing Gaza right away so we can get the hostages out safely and quickly!” It’s just too hazardous to do that right now.
Key Demands Are Still Not Met
The terrorist group’s statement didn’t address Israel’s main demand in the Trump proposal: Hamas’s disarming. However, the acceptance of the captive release and the willingness to give up political power are big steps forward.
Hamas said that the proposal also includes issues about the future of the Gaza Strip and the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. These issues are linked to a “collective national position” and will be talked about in a “comprehensive Palestinian national framework,” which will include Hamas.
What Trump’s Peace Plan Says
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supports Trump’s multi-point peace plan, which attempts to stop the violence that has been going on for almost two years. The plan says that
An end to all fighting right away and the release of all hostages (alive and dead) within 72 hours.
An Israeli pullout from Gaza over time.
Hamas must give up its weapons and agree that the group “will not have any role in the governance of Gaza.”
A technocratic body will be in charge of the land, with a post-war transitional authority watching over it. Trump himself may be in charge of this body.
A huge amount of humanitarian help and rebuilding work.
The next stage is for mediators, probably Qatar and Egypt, to sort out the terms of the prisoner exchange and how Gaza would be run in the future.
