Gujarat Titans Defeat Mumbai Indians By 36 Runs In Ahmedabad Thriller

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India]: A stellar bowling performance by Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj, coupled with a solid half-century from Sai Sudharsan, helped Gujarat Titans (GT) secure a 36-run victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday.

With this win, GT added two crucial points to their tally and maintained their perfect 4-0 record against MI in Ahmedabad, improving their overall head-to-head record to 4-2.

Mumbai’s Run Chase Falls Short

Chasing 197, MI got off to a shaky start as Rohit Sharma struck two boundaries against Mohammed Siraj but was bowled out on the very next ball. MI was 8/1 in just 0.4 overs.

Tilak Varma, joining Ryan Rickelton, looked aggressive against Kagiso Rabada, hitting two fours and a six. However, Siraj struck again, dismissing Rickelton for six, leaving MI at 35/2 in 4.3 overs.

Tilak then partnered with Suryakumar Yadav to take MI to 48/2 by the end of the powerplay. MI reached the 50-run mark in 6.2 overs. At the halfway mark, MI stood at 86/2, with Tilak (37*) and Suryakumar (29*) unbeaten. Their 50-run partnership came in just 31 balls.

The breakthrough came when Prasidh Krishna dismissed Tilak for 39 off 36 balls, caught by Rahul Tewatia at long-on. MI was reduced to 97/3 in 11.3 overs.

Robin Minz, the uncapped Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batter, failed to make an impact, falling for three to Sai Kishore. MI was 108/4 in 13 overs.

At the 15-over mark, MI was 118/4, with Suryakumar (47*) and Hardik Pandya (9*) at the crease. However, GT turned the game around as Suryakumar (48 off 28 balls, one four, four sixes) and Hardik (11 off 17 balls) both fell quickly. MI collapsed to 124/6 in 17 overs and could only manage 160/6 by the end of 20 overs.

Prasidh Krishna (2/18) and Mohammed Siraj (2/34) led the bowling attack for GT, while Sai Kishore and Kagiso Rabada took a wicket each.

Gujarat’s Batting Performance

Earlier, Gujarat Titans (GT) seemed poised for a 200-plus total but suffered a late collapse, finishing at 196/8.

After MI opted to field, GT’s openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan provided a strong start with a 78-run partnership before Gill fell for 38 to MI skipper Hardik Pandya. Jos Buttler joined Sudharsan, adding a 51-run stand before being dismissed for 39 by Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Shahrukh Khan, retained by GT, failed to make an impact, scoring just nine before Pandya picked up his second wicket. GT reached 150 in 15.5 overs, looking set for a big total.

However, a dramatic collapse occurred at 179/3 when Sudharsan (63 off 41 balls) was dismissed on the last ball of Trent Boult’s spell. Rahul Tewatia was run out without facing a ball, and Sherfane Rutherford fell on the very next delivery to Deepak Chahar for 18. GT suddenly found themselves at 179/6 in 18.2 overs.

Despite Rashid Khan and Kagiso Rabada at the crease, GT couldn’t cross the 200-run mark due to disciplined death bowling from MI.

Hardik Pandya led MI’s bowling attack with figures of 2/29, while Boult, Chahar, Mujeeb, and Satyanarayana Raju took one wicket each.

Brief Scores:

  • Gujarat Titans: 196/8 (Sai Sudharsan 63, Jos Buttler 39; Hardik Pandya 2/29)
  • Mumbai Indians: 160/6 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 48, Tilak Varma 39; Prasidh Krishna 2/18)
