Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India]: In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a net-zero India by 2070, Gujarat has emerged as the top state in the country for renewable energy (RE) installation, achieving a significant milestone with 35.16 GW of installed capacity as of April 30, 2025, according to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
Under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat ranks:
- 1st in Total Installed Renewable Energy Capacity (35.16 GW)
- 1st in Installed Wind Power Capacity (13.51 GW)
- 2nd in Installed Solar Power Capacity (19.42 GW)
- 1st in Rooftop Solar Installation (5.31 GW)
The state now contributes 15.72% of India’s total renewable energy capacity, reinforcing its status as a key driver of the national clean energy transition.
Diverse Renewable Energy Mix
Gujarat’s renewable portfolio includes:
- Wind: 13,514.68 MW
- Solar: 19,421.8 MW
- Small Hydro: 106.64 MW
- Large Hydro: 1,990 MW
- Bio Power: 129.85 MW
This diverse mix ensures both grid stability and long-term sustainability, positioning the state as a clean energy pioneer.
Innovation in Energy Storage
Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) is at the forefront of energy storage innovations, ensuring better grid integration of intermittent renewable sources. The agency has finalized agreements for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a cumulative capacity of 1,192 MW / 4,777 MWh.
Additionally, the state is actively exploring Pumped Storage Projects with an estimated potential of over 32 GW. A standout initiative includes a 35 MW Solar PV project with 57 MWh BESS at the Kutch Lignite Thermal Power Station (KLTPS), optimizing land and grid infrastructure for greater efficiency.
Record Clean Energy Generation
During FY 2024–25, Gujarat generated 32,790 million units (MU) of electricity from renewable sources—representing over 22% of the state’s total power consumption (1,46,467 MU). This underscores the rapid and effective shift towards clean energy.
In the same year, the state added over 5.9 GW of new RE capacity, with 4.95 GW from solar and 954.76 MW from wind.
Powering Growth, Sustainably
GUVNL’s initiatives are making renewable power more accessible and affordable, especially for industrial clusters and GIDC estates, allowing economic growth without compromising on sustainability goals.
With visionary leadership, robust infrastructure, and progressive policy frameworks, Gujarat continues to lead India’s clean energy journey. The state’s commitment to scale, innovation, and inclusivity is powering its industries and communities while advancing the national goal of Viksit Bharat @2047.
