A devastating fire broke out in an embroidery unit in the Kapodra locality of Surat, Gujarat, early Thursday morning, leading to a series of high-intensity gas cylinder explosions. The incident, which occurred around 5:30 AM near Rachna Circle in the Bharatnagar area, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left nine others with varying degrees of burn injuries.
The Sequence of Events
The blaze reportedly started on the third floor of the commercial building. While eight gas cylinders were stored on the premises, two cylinders detonated shortly after the fire began. The explosions significantly accelerated the spread of the flames, making the initial rescue efforts extremely hazardous.
Rescue Operations
- Rapid Response: Fire tenders from four different stations were dispatched to the site immediately after the alarm was raised.
- Strategic Extraction: To reach those trapped, firefighters had to break through a protective sheet covering the third floor.
- Casualties: Out of the 11 people pulled from the building, two were declared dead. The remaining nine survivors are currently receiving medical treatment for minor to moderate burn injuries at a nearby hospital.
The Surat fire department confirmed that the explosion occurred just before their vehicles arrived, which hindered immediate containment. Investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause of the initial fire and whether the storage of eight cylinders within the embroidery unit followed standard safety regulations.
