Chennai: The Gujarat Titans (GT) has rejected Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) approach to acquire all-rounder Washington Sundar ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, according to a report.
The five-time champions, who are reportedly engaged in trade talks involving Ravindra Jadeja and Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson, had identified Sundar as a key target to strengthen their spin department following R Ashwin’s retirement.
However, sources confirmed that GT have made it clear the all-rounder is a core part of their future plans and will not be released.
CSK’s Spin Puzzle
With Ashwin stepping away from the IPL and Jadeja potentially part of a blockbuster trade deal with Rajasthan Royals, CSK currently have only Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad as an established frontline spinner in their squad.
Sundar, who has worked under CSK head coach Stephen Fleming during their time together at Rising Pune Supergiants, emerged as a top target for the franchise.
The Tamil Nadu-born cricketer, bought by Gujarat for ₹3.2 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, played six matches last season. His recent performances for Team India have further enhanced his value as a powerplay spinner and lower-order batter.
CSK Eyeing Sanju Samson
Meanwhile, CSK are also pursuing Sanju Samson, the current Rajasthan Royals captain, as part of a potential trade that could see Ravindra Jadeja and England all-rounder Sam Curran move to the Jaipur-based franchise.
A senior CSK official, speaking to media, confirmed the development:
“Everyone knows we are interested in getting Sanju. We have expressed our interest during this trading window. RR is yet to confirm, but we are hopeful Sanju will play for CSK.”
Samson, who has spent over a decade with RR and led them since IPL 2021, has reportedly expressed a desire for a new challenge after the conclusion of the 2025 season.
Jadeja and Curran in the Mix
Ravindra Jadeja, one of CSK’s longest-serving players and a former captain, is said to be a key component of the proposed trade package. Jadeja began his IPL career with RR during the league’s first two editions before becoming a mainstay at CSK, contributing with both bat and ball.
England’s Sam Curran, who has previously represented both Punjab Kings and CSK, is also being considered as part of the multi-player exchange deal.
What Lies Ahead
If the reported trade goes through, it would mark one of the most significant player exchanges in IPL history, reshaping the balance of three major franchises — CSK, RR, and GT.
However, with Gujarat Titans refusing to part with Sundar, CSK will have to look elsewhere to strengthen their spin options ahead of the IPL 2026 mega season.
