Murshidabad (West Bengal) [India], April 19: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, during his visit to violence-hit Murshidabad on Saturday, met with victims of the April 11 unrest that erupted during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. Emphasizing the need for restoring security and addressing grievances, the Governor assured the victims that their concerns would be taken up with both the Central and State governments.
Speaking to reporters, Governor Bose stated, “They (victims) want a sense of security, along with other suggestions and demands they have shared. I will bring all of it to the attention of both the Government of India and the State Government for necessary action. I’ve encouraged them to contact me directly and shared my phone number with them. We will remain in touch, and effective, proactive steps will be taken.”
Bose’s visit to Murshidabad followed his earlier stop at a relief camp in Par Lalpur in Malda district on Friday, where he interacted with displaced families and promised swift action. “I had a detailed discussion with them. I listened to their grievances and understood their feelings. They informed me of their needs and expectations,” he said.
The Governor also mentioned plans to visit more affected areas on Saturday to further assess the situation and provide support to those impacted by the violence.
Meanwhile, a team from the National Commission for Women (NCW), led by Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, also visited the affected Murshidabad region. Addressing the media, Rahatkar condemned the inhumane suffering endured by the victims and pledged to present their demands to the Centre.
Visibly moved after meeting the family of a father and son allegedly killed during the protests in Jafrabad, Rahatkar said, “These people are in so much pain that I am speechless. I don’t have the words to describe their suffering.”
The violence claimed three lives, left several injured, and displaced numerous families. While some have fled to Jharkhand’s Pakur district, others have found shelter in relief camps established in Malda.
