Government Tightens Watch on Weight-Loss Drugs to Prevent Misuse

The Drugs Controller General of India has intensified surveillance over the supply chain of GLP-1 class weight-loss drugs amid rising concerns over their misuse and easy availability in India.

With multiple generic versions entering the market, authorities found that these medications were being sold through online platforms, pharmacies, and wellness clinics without proper prescriptions. To tackle this, regulators conducted inspections at 49 entities, including wholesalers and online pharmacy warehouses.

GLP-1 drugs, commonly used for weight loss and diabetes management, can pose serious health risks if taken without medical supervision. The government has stressed that these medicines should only be prescribed by qualified specialists such as endocrinologists and physicians.

Earlier this month, the regulator also issued a strict advisory banning misleading advertisements and indirect promotions that could encourage unsafe or off-label use. Notices have already been sent to violators.

The government has made it clear that patient safety is the top priority, warning that strict action—including license cancellation and penalties—will be taken against those found violating norms.
