“Golden Globes 2025: Payal Kapadia Misses Out On Best Director Award To Brady Corbet”

Los Angeles [US], January 6: The 82nd Golden Globe Awards ended in disappointment for Indian fans, as India’s entry All We Imagine As Light lost both awards it was nominated for.

Director Payal Kapadia, who was in the running for Best Director with her film All We Imagine As Light, faced stiff competition from Brady Corbet (for The Brutalist), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance). Unfortunately, Kapadia lost out to Corbet in the Best Director category.

The film was also nominated for Best Non-English Language Motion Picture but was edged out by Emilia Perez, which claimed the award in this category.

Despite the losses, Kapadia maintained a positive spirit, cheering for other winners with a smile. She attended the ceremony in a black handwoven silk jumpsuit by Payal Khandwala, accentuated with a pop of red.

All We Imagine As Light stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, Anand Sami, and Hridhu Haroon, and is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. The film explores the intertwined lives of Prabha, a troubled nurse who receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, and Anu, her young roommate navigating intimacy with her boyfriend. The two women’s journey to a beach town serves as the backdrop for confronting their desires.

The film made history earlier in 2024 when it premiered in the prestigious ‘competition section’ at the Cannes Film Festival, marking the first Indian film in 30 years to feature in this segment. The last Indian movie to do so was Shaji N Karun’s Swaham in 1994.

While she didn’t bag a Golden Globe, Kapadia’s nomination made her the first Indian director ever to be nominated in the Best Director category, a moment of immense pride for Indian cinema.

Reacting to her nomination, Kapadia said earlier, “I’m deeply honoured by this nomination and grateful to the HFPA for this recognition. This is a celebration of everyone who worked so passionately on the film. To everyone in India, All We Imagine as Light is still in theatres—please go watch it and support us!”

In 2023, Naatu Naatu from RRR made waves by winning Best Original Song, but India’s presence at the Golden Globes has remained significant, with All We Imagine As Light marking a historic achievement for Indian cinema this year.

The Golden Globe Awards 2025, telecast in the US on Sunday night, streamed live in India on Monday via Lionsgate Play.
