New Delhi [India], April 9: Punjab Kings’ all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and received one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the match against Chennai Super Kings at the New PCA Stadium on Tuesday.
The IPL confirmed the sanction in a statement issued Wednesday, stating that Maxwell admitted to a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2, which pertains to abuse of fixtures and fittings during the match. As per IPL regulations, the decision of the match referee is final and binding for Level 1 violations.
“Glenn Maxwell, Punjab Kings’ all-rounder, has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct… Maxwell admitted to the Level 1 offence under article 2.2 (abuse of fixtures and fittings during the Match) and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction,” the statement read.
The Australian cricketer, who was signed by Punjab Kings for ₹4.2 crore, has had a forgettable run in IPL 2025 so far. His struggle with the bat continued as he managed just 1 run off 2 balls against CSK, taking his total tally to a mere 31 runs in four matches.
Despite his lack of form with the bat, Maxwell has contributed with the ball, particularly in the match against Chennai, where he delivered an economical spell of 1/11 from two overs. Across four games, he has claimed three wickets for the Kings.
Punjab, however, powered past Maxwell’s underwhelming performance with a commanding show from the rest of the squad. Priyansh Arya smashed a 39-ball century—his first in the IPL—while Shashank Singh (52*) and Marco Jansen (34*) added late firepower to propel Punjab Kings to 219/6.
Although CSK’s openers Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra provided a strong start in the chase, Punjab’s bowling attack tightened the screws in the middle overs, leading to an 18-run win for the hosts.
