Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill reached a significant milestone on Sunday by completing 5000 runs in T20 cricket during the 60th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
Gill delivered a stellar unbeaten knock of 93 runs off 53 balls, striking at a strike rate of 175.47, with three fours and seven sixes. This match-winning performance not only helped GT secure a dominant victory but also saw the right-handed batter enter the elite 5000-run club in T20 cricket.
By reaching the 5000-run mark in 154 innings, Gill became the sixth fastest player in cricket history to achieve this feat. He joins the ranks of:
- Chris Gayle (132 innings)
- KL Rahul (143 innings)
- Shaun Marsh (144 innings)
- Devon Conway (144 innings)
- Babar Azam (145 innings)
A massive 205-run unbeaten partnership between Gill and opener Sai Sudharsan, who also scored a century, powered Gujarat Titans to a 10-wicket rout of the Capitals, dismantling their bowling unit with ease.
With this win, Gujarat Titans climbed to the top of the IPL 2025 points table with 18 points from 12 matches, securing a spot in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals, led by Axar Patel, stayed at fifth place with 13 points from 12 matches, making their qualification path tougher.
Speaking after the match, Shubman Gill shared his thoughts on the team’s performance and his growth as a captain.
“Feels great to be able to get that Q on the board. Still, two important games for us, getting the momentum into the playoffs, will be very important. Feels amazing, I have talked about this a couple of times, when I’m batting, I want to play and think as a batsman, not as a captain. Last year was a learning for me as I was captain for the 1st time, and the back end last season I learnt that.”
