George Wendt, Beloved ‘Cheers’ Star Known As Norm Peterson, Dies at 76

Washington DC [US], May 21: George Wendt, the actor and comedian cherished for his role as Norm Peterson on the iconic sitcom Cheers, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 76, as confirmed by his publicist Melissa Nathan to Variety.

“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever,” the family’s statement read, requesting privacy during this difficult time.

Wendt’s portrayal of the affable barfly Norm — whose entrance line “Afternoon, everybody!” always prompted a chorus of “Norm!” — earned him six consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He was a central figure throughout the show’s entire 11-season run from 1982 to 1993.

Wendt also reprised the beloved character in the spin-offs The Tortellis and Frasier, cementing Norm Peterson as one of television’s most enduring and iconic characters.

Tributes From Cast and Colleagues

His Cheers co-stars shared heartfelt tributes following the news of his passing.

  • Ted Danson (Sam Malone): “I am devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us. I am sending all my love to Bernadette and the children. It is going to take me a long time to get used to this. I love you, Georgie.”
  • Rhea Perlman (Carla Tortelli): “George Wendt was the sweetest, kindest man I ever met. As Carla, I was often standing next to him… I loved doing it and he loved pretending it didn’t hurt. What a guy! I’ll miss him more than words can say.”

A Career Beyond Cheers

While best known for Cheers, Wendt had a broad and successful television and film career. His extensive guest appearances included popular shows like Hot in Cleveland, The Twilight Zone, Columbo, George Lopez, and Fresh Off the Boat. He was also a frequent presence on Saturday Night Live, where he played memorable characters such as a die-hard Chicago sports fan in the recurring “Da Bears” sketch.

Wendt is survived by his wife Bernadette Birkett — who also played the voice of Norm’s never-seen wife Vera on Cheers — and their three children.
