New Delhi [India], January 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday celebrated the completion of the Genome India Project, describing it as a historic achievement in biotechnology that has the potential to revolutionize healthcare and genetic research in India.
In a video statement, PM Modi highlighted the significance of sequencing the genomes of 10,000 individuals, which will help unravel India’s diverse genetic landscape and pave the way for policy development and innovative solutions in healthcare.
“Today, India has taken a momentous step in the field of research. Five years ago, the Genome India Project was approved, and despite challenges, especially the COVID-19 pandemic, our scientists have worked diligently to complete this ambitious project. The genomic data of 10,000 Indians is now available at the Indian Biological Data Centre, and I am confident that this will be a major milestone in biotechnology,” the Prime Minister said.
The project, which provides comprehensive genetic data from a diverse range of Indian populations, will enable scientists and researchers to better understand the genetic diversity of India. This information is expected to aid in policymaking and the development of targeted healthcare solutions.
“India has vast genetic diversity, and the nature of diseases across our population is equally diverse. Understanding genetic differences is essential for developing personalized medicines. This project will help us design precise treatments tailored to individuals’ genetic profiles,” PM Modi explained.
He further emphasized the importance of such research in addressing health challenges in specific communities. For example, the Prime Minister noted that sickle cell anemia is a significant health issue in tribal areas and that genomic studies could provide insights into regional health disparities.
“In our tribal communities, sickle cell anemia is a major challenge. While we have launched a National Mission to address it, a deeper understanding of the genetic makeup of these communities will help us design more effective solutions,” PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of biotechnology and the bioeconomy in India’s development. He explained that the efficient use of natural resources, coupled with biotechnology innovations, is key to India’s progress.
“The bio-economy is a cornerstone for India’s future, promoting the use of bio-based products, creating jobs, and driving sustainable development. Over the past decade, India’s bio-economy has expanded rapidly, growing from 10 billion dollars in 2014 to over 150 billion today,” he noted.
PM Modi also pointed out that India, now recognized as a global pharmaceutical hub, has made significant strides in public healthcare, including providing free treatment to millions and offering medicines at discounted prices through Jan Aushadhi Kendras. He assured that the Genome India Project would further enhance India’s healthcare capabilities.
The Genome India Project, launched by the Department of Biotechnology in January 2020, aims to sequence the genomes of 10,000 healthy Indian individuals from diverse regions of the country. Its goal is to create a comprehensive catalogue of genetic variations specific to India’s population, enabling researchers to better understand the nation’s genetic diversity.
This initiative is poised to revolutionize healthcare by providing a valuable national resource that will drive precision medicine, improve public health, and support groundbreaking research in genetic disorders.
