Gaza Violence: Five Palestinians Killed In Shujaiya Amid Israeli Drone Strikes

Five Palestinians were killed On Tuesday, in the Shujaiya district of Gaza City while inspecting their homes, according to Mahmud Bassal, spokesperson for Gaza’s civil defence agency, a rescue force operating under Hamas.

“Israeli quadcopter drones opened fire on civilians inspecting their homes in Shujaiya,” Bassal told reporters.

In total, the civil defence agency reported six deaths across Gaza on Tuesday. One additional person was killed in the town of Al-Fukhari, southeast of Khan Yunis city, when an Israeli drone targeted a group of civilians.

Israeli Military Statement

The Israeli military confirmed that its troops opened fire after identifying “several suspects crossing the yellow line and approaching IDF troops operating in the northern Gaza Strip.”

“Attempts were made to distance the suspects,” the military statement read.
“The suspects did not comply and continued approaching the troops, who opened fire to remove the threat.”

Regarding the Al-Fukhari incident, the military said the group “posed an immediate threat” by moving toward a former Hamas weapons storage facility.

Under the current ceasefire agreement, Israeli forces have pulled back to a so-called “yellow line”, behind which they continue to control roughly half of Gaza.

Context and Background

Tuesday’s incidents come on the fifth day of a truce brokered by US President Donald Trump.

As part of the agreement, Hamas released the remaining 20 living hostages along with the bodies of four captives. In return, Israel freed nearly 2,000 prisoners, mostly Palestinians, and handed over the remains of 45 individuals.

Due to media restrictions in Gaza and limited access to many areas, AFP was unable to independently verify the casualty numbers or the details provided by either the civil defence agency or the Israeli military.
