Gangapuri Maharaj, Known As Chhotu Baba, Captures Attention At Maha Kumbh Mela

Gangapuri Maharaj, popularly known as Chhotu Baba, has become a prominent figure at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The 57-year-old spiritual figure, hailing from Assam’s Kamakhya Peeth, is known for his unique lifestyle and personality.

“This is Milan Mela. Soul to soul should be connected and that’s why I’m here,” Baba shared with media on Friday.

Standing at just three feet eight inches, Gangapuri Maharaj has drawn significant attention, not only for his height but also for his commitment to an unusual vow. “I am 3 feet 8 inches. I am 57 years old. I am very happy to come here. You people are also here, I am happy in that also,” he added.

Remarkably, Maharaj has not taken a bath for the past 32 years, a decision tied to a deeply personal wish. “I do not take a bath because I have a wish which has not been fulfilled in the last 32 years. I will not take a bath in the Ganga,” he explained.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, celebrated every 12 years, is attracting millions of devotees from January 13 to February 26 this year. To ensure the safety of attendees, the district administration has implemented significant crowd management and fire safety measures.

Advanced technologies are being employed, including Quick Response Vehicles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), firefighting robots, and fire mist bikes. Firefighting boats, capable of using river water to extinguish fires, will also be deployed soon.

Additionally, the Prayagraj division of North Central Railway has introduced modern ticketing solutions to streamline the experience for pilgrims. Dedicated railway personnel in green jackets with QR codes printed on the back will assist visitors. By scanning the QR code, pilgrims can download the UTS mobile app to book unreserved tickets without waiting in long queues.

The main rituals of the Maha Kumbh, the Shahi Snan (royal baths), will occur on January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3 (Basant Panchami).
