FSSAI Bans Use Of ‘ORS’ On Food Product Labels And Advertisements

New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has told all food businesses to stop using the word “ORS” (Oral Rehydration Solution) on product labels, ads, or trademarks right away since it is misleading to customers.

Even if “ORS” is used with a prefix or suffix, the regulator made it clear in its order on October 14, 2025, that this is against the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

History and Previous Orders

In July 2022 and February 2024, the government said that food labels might use the name “ORS” as long as the product had a warning that said, “the product is not an ORS formula as recommended by WHO.”

FSSAI looked into the issue and decided that this kind of labeling is inaccurate, misleading, unclear, and wrong, which is a kind of misbranding.

The authority added, “Using the term will now be seen as misbranded and misleading, and will be punished under the FSSAI Act 2006.”

Instructions for Compliance

All people who run food businesses must:

Take “ORS” out of product names, trademarks, labels, and ads.

Make sure that all labeling and advertising rules are followed exactly as they are set out in the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

The FSSAI stressed that the April 8, 2022 order on misleading advertising and marketing of ORS replacement products is still in effect.

This action protects consumers further and makes sure that items are not deceptively advertised as medically advised ORS alternatives.
