New Delhi [India], July 15: The newly released NCERT Hindi textbook for Class 5, titled Veena, is turning heads for its rich blend of India’s cultural heritage and cutting-edge science, offering young learners an engaging journey from sacred rivers to space missions.
Developed under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Veena aims to ignite curiosity while grounding students in India’s civilisational values. The textbook has been prepared for the 2025–26 academic year and features a vibrant mix of themes — from artificial intelligence to folk tales, and historical figures to environmental conservation.
One of the central highlights is “Ganga ki Kahani”, a vivid narrative that traces the sacred river’s path from Gomukh to Gangasagar, weaving in cultural touchpoints like Haridwar, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Kolkata, Patna, and Kanpur. The chapter doesn’t just chart the river’s geography, but also introduces readers to ashrams, saints, and iconic events like the Kumbh Mela, capturing the spiritual and socio-economic essence of life along the Ganga.
In contrast, the chapter “AI” breaks down the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, helping students understand how machines mimic human thinking and learning. Designed to foster scientific temper in young minds, it encourages inquiry into the technology shaping their world.
Space enthusiasts will enjoy “Gaganyaan”, a conversational chapter centered around ISRO’s first human spaceflight mission. Students meet Vyommitra, India’s humanoid astronaut, and gain insights into the country’s growing ambitions in space.
The book also touches on moral values and civic duties through chapters like “Nyay Ki Kursi”, which uses historical figures Raja Bhoj and Vikramaditya to explore fairness and justice, and “Haathi aur Cheenti,” a clever animal fable teaching road safety and helmet use.
Other notable inclusions are:
- Kaziranga National Park – showcasing wildlife conservation
- Ajanta and Ellora Caves – celebrating ancient art and architecture
- Natural colour making – encouraging eco-conscious creativity
- A chapter on Paralympic hero Murlikant Petkar – promoting empathy and resilience
The NCERT is currently in the process of rolling out new textbooks aligned with NEP 2020. While many have been launched, the full set is expected to be released by end of 2025.
