Vitamin D deficiency is strikingly common in India, even among people who maintain a healthy diet and get regular sun exposure. Dr Shubham Vatsya, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, Delhi, with over a decade of experience, explained the reasons behind this silent epidemic in a January 31 Instagram post.
According to Dr Vatsya, 4 out of every 5 Indians are vitamin D deficient. He describes vitamin D as a hormone-like nutrient that coordinates multiple systems in the body, meaning a deficiency can impact bones, muscles, immunity, energy, and mood simultaneously.
Impact on Bones and Muscles:
Vitamin D is crucial for calcium absorption in the gut. Low levels can cause bone pain, frequent muscle cramps, and long-term risks like osteoporosis, even in young adults.
Impact on Immunity:
Vitamin D activates immune cells, helping the body fight infections. Those with insufficient vitamin D are more prone to colds, flu, respiratory infections, and chronic fatigue.
Impact on Mood and Metabolism:
Beyond physical health, vitamin D also influences insulin sensitivity, energy levels, and mood-regulating hormones, meaning deficiency can contribute to low energy and chronic tiredness.
Advice from Dr Vatsya:
He cautions against self-medicating with vitamin D supplements. Levels should be tested before supplementation, and dosages should be taken only as prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Dr Vatsya emphasizes that vitamin D deficiency is often overlooked because its symptoms can be subtle, yet correcting it is essential for overall health.
