Former Naxalite Commander Turned Policeman Wins President’s Gallantry Medal For Third Time

Dantewada (Chhattisgarh) [India]: In a story of extraordinary transformation, former Naxalite commander Sanjay Potam, also known as Badru, has been awarded the prestigious President’s Medal for Gallantry for the third time. The award recognizes his outstanding courage and dedication to public service.

Sanjay Potam surrendered in 2013 and transitioned from being a Naxalite to serving as a police officer. Over the years, he has risen to become a 3-star officer.

Expressing gratitude, Potam shared his feelings with ANI, stating, “I am grateful that I received this award. I got the responsibility of the Sukma-Dantewada border when I was involved in Naxalism.”

He appealed to active Naxalites to surrender and embrace a peaceful life, emphasizing that their path holds no future. “When I left Naxalism, I was a DEC member. The people there do not get any benefits. They are just promoted based on the responsibilities they can handle. I got involved in Naxalism as I didn’t know about what was happening in the outer world. I want to tell everyone that Naxalites misguide people. They are provoking people to choose the path of violence, which is not right. So, I request all the Naxalites to surrender and lead a normal life,” he urged.

Potam’s journey also reflects hope and renewal on a personal level. His wife, formerly associated with Naxalism, now works as a peon in a government office.

“My wife was also associated with Naxalism. Now, she is working as a peon in the government office. I am grateful… I have visited some states and cities, and whenever I see it, I feel our Bastar is so underdeveloped,” Potam said.

The Bastar region in southern Chhattisgarh has been a hotspot of Naxal insurgency for decades. Despite being rich in natural resources like iron ore, coal, and timber, the region has faced significant challenges due to poverty, poor infrastructure, and limited access to basic amenities like education and healthcare.

Sanjay Potam’s story is a beacon of hope for those affected by Naxalism, showcasing the potential for transformation, redemption, and a better future.
