Washington [US], March 10: Actress Florence Pugh recently shared her thoughts on the upcoming Marvel film Thunderbolts, calling it quite different from the usual Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pugh described Thunderbolts as a “badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes.” The comparison to indie cinema reflects the film’s distinct tone within the MCU.
Director Jake Schreier, known for his work on Netflix’s Beef, was tasked with bringing a fresh approach to the project. He shared, “There’s a certain amount of that Beef tone in it that does feel different. There’s an emotional darkness that we brought to this that is resonant but doesn’t come at the expense of comedy.”
Thunderbolts follows a group of unconventional antiheroes who team up for a government mission. The film stars Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, along with Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), David Harbour (Red Guardian), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost), Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster), and Wyatt Russell (John Walker).
Pugh’s comments come in the wake of the success of Anora, a film from Neon, which swept the Oscars, winning five awards, including Best Picture. The current struggles of indie cinema were also discussed by Anora director Sean Baker at the Spirit Awards, emphasizing the need for change in the industry to provide fairer compensation for creatives involved in long-term projects.
Thunderbolts, produced by Kevin Feige and executive produced by Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, and Jason Tamez, is set for release on May 2, 2025.
