More than 250 families have been displaced following a severe flash flood in South Tripura district, triggered by incessant rainfall that began on Monday night, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The floodwaters inundated low-lying areas in Belonia and Santirbazar subdivisions, forcing 118 families (289 people) to seek shelter in 10 relief camps, said District Magistrate Muhammad Sajad.
“The water level in Muhuri River has crossed the danger mark of 15.70 metres, flooding both sides of the embankment. However, the rainfall intensity has reduced for now,” DM Sajad told media.
Precautionary Closures and Alerts
As a precautionary measure, the district administration shut all schools and anganwadi centres on Wednesday.
Residents in vulnerable zones were advised to remain alert for possible evacuations.
“Disaster management teams and civil officials are on standby. The situation is being monitored continuously,” the DM added.
Chief Minister’s Response
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha contacted the district officials and directed them to ensure full assistance to affected residents. Relief efforts and safety protocols have been intensified across impacted areas.
IMD Issues Alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an ‘orange alert’ (be prepared) for South Tripura, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall.
Yellow alerts were issued for Gomati and Sepahijala districts, indicating residents should stay aware of worsening weather.
Current Situation
While rains have eased, authorities remain cautious as floodwater levels remain above danger limits. Locals are urged not to return to inundated homes until official clearance is given.
