Kullu (Himachal Pradesh) [India], March 1: Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall in lower areas of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, have caused widespread disruption, with numerous vehicles swept away or trapped in deep sludge. The flash floods have also led to landslides, further complicating the situation in several parts of the district.
Recent visuals from the region show vehicles stranded in thick mud, as the aftermath of the flood continues to affect daily life. The continuous torrential rain has resulted in blocked roads, with 583 roads, including five National Highways, reported to be closed across the state due to snowfall and rain, according to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority.
The rain has had a severe impact on infrastructure, with a total of 2263 distribution transformers (DTRs) down, causing widespread power outages. Additionally, 279 water supply schemes have been impacted, leaving many regions without essential services.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, in light of the ongoing situation, urged people to avoid rivers and streams, as the threat of floods and landslides persists. He requested residents to stay cautious and follow guidelines issued by the administration. “I have been taking stock of the situation since morning. All people are requested to be cautious and follow the guidelines issued by the administration,” said Sukhu, emphasizing safety amidst the dangerous conditions.
As part of the flood management efforts, Sukhu informed that authorities have been directed to open the gates of one of the power project dams, as heavy downpours have affected the Kullu Valley. Intense snowfall has also been reported in the upper Himalayan regions of Lahaul and Spiti, adding to the challenging conditions.
The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued an alert for continued heavy rain and snowfall in parts of the state, including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi districts. The situation remains critical as the weather conditions continue to impact roads and essential services.
Deputy Commissioner of Kullu, Torul S. Ravish, has advised the public to stay indoors until the water levels subside. “Many link roads and the main road on the left bank have been blocked due to rains for the last 15-16 hours. I request the public to remain where they are as the water level has also increased in rivers and nalas,” Ravish stated, urging caution.
In Manali, one foot of snow has been reported, leading to the closure of educational institutions in the district. Furthermore, the main national highway from the Jalori side has been shut due to heavy snow accumulation.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are working to restore essential services and clear blocked roads.
