Flash Flood Emergency In Texas: New Alerts Issued As Guadalupe River Rises; 79 Dead, 12 Still Missing

KERRVILLE, TEXAS — A new emergency alert was issued Sunday for multiple parts of Kerr County as torrential rains continue to fuel deadly flash flooding along the North Fork of the Guadalupe River. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned residents in Hunt, Ingram, and Kerrville to immediately seek higher ground.

“Move immediately to higher ground,” the NWS Austin/San Antonio office urged in a public alert as rising river levels triggered multiple flood warnings across the region.

Flash Flood Warnings Expanded

Three flash flood warnings are now active:

  • Eastern Burnet County, western Williamson County, and northwestern Travis County – until 6:00 PM
  • Southwestern Gillespie County and northeastern Kerr County – until 6:30 PM
  • Hunt and Ingram – through 7:30 PM

As of Sunday afternoon, heavy rainfall totaling 10–20 inches has devastated the Texas Hill Country.

Rivers Surge, Towns Submerged

According to NWS data, the Guadalupe River surged between 20 and 29 feet in just 45 minutes on Friday, reaching catastrophic flood stages:

  • 29.45 feet near Hunt
  • 34.76 feet near Comfort

Communities including Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Burnet, Georgetown, Leander, and Lakeway were also impacted by widespread flash flooding.

Death Toll Reaches 79, Dozens Still Missing

Sheriff Larry Leitha confirmed 68 deaths in Kerr County, including 28 children, primarily near youth camps like Camp Mystic. In total, 79 people have been confirmed dead across six counties:

  • Kerr County: 68 deaths
  • Travis County: 4
  • Burnet County: 3
  • Kendall County: 2
  • Williamson County: 1
  • Tom Green County: 1

Missing Campers and Ongoing Search Efforts

“We will keep searching until everybody is found,” Sheriff Leitha vowed.

Colonel Freeman Martin of the Texas Department of Public Safety warned the death toll is expected to rise in the coming days.

Federal Response and Support

President Donald Trump issued a “Major Disaster Declaration” for Kerr County on Sunday, saying in a Truth Social post:

“These families are enduring an unimaginable tragedy… The Trump Administration continues to work closely with State and Local Leaders.”

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and Texas Governor Greg Abbott were on the ground coordinating relief efforts.
