First COVID-19 Case Reported In Noida Amid Nationwide Uptick; Experts Urge Caution, Not Panic

Noida (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 24: A 55-year-old woman from Sector 110 in Noida has tested positive for COVID-19, marking the first confirmed case in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddha Nagar district amid a recent uptick in cases across India, according to Chief Medical Officer Dr. Narendra Kumar.

The woman, who had recently travelled by train, is currently under home isolation. Her husband and domestic helper, who reside in the same household, have tested negative, the CMO confirmed.

This comes as part of a nationwide trend of isolated COVID-19 cases being reported, including three cases at AIIMS Rishikesh.
Dr. Meenu Singh, Director of AIIMS Rishikesh, noted:

“Three COVID patients have been reported… One has been discharged, another is one of our residents in isolation, and the third is a visitor from Gujarat here for the Badrinath Yatra.”

Dr. Singh reassured the public that the current COVID variant appears to be mild, but advised caution, especially for those with comorbid conditions:

“This variant is not very harmful, but vulnerable groups should get checked if symptoms appear.”

In response to the nationwide rise in cases, the Delhi government has issued an advisory, instructing all hospitals to prepare for any potential surge — ensuring the availability of beds, oxygen, medicines, and vaccines.

Health experts, however, stress that there is no cause for panic.
Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, Senior Consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, said:

“The situation is under control. Most cases are mild, managed without hospitalisation. COVID now resembles seasonal flu in most instances.”

He added that there have been no ICU admissions due to COVID at their facility, calling the concerns around recent cases “more hype than hazard.”

As of May 19, India had only 257 active COVID-19 cases — a negligible figure considering its vast population. Nearly all cases are mild, and the country continues to rely on the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and ICMR systems for tracking respiratory illnesses.

Officials urge the public to follow basic precautions, especially those with weakened immunity, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions, but emphasized that normal life can continue with awareness and responsibility.
