Fire Erupts in Ukraine Government Building After Russian Strikes

After a Russian attack on Kyiv on Sunday, a fire broke out on the roof of an administrative building in the Pecherskyi neighborhood. Timur Tkachenko, the chief of Kyiv’s military administration, and Mayor Vitali Klitschko say that the attack started with drones and then missiles hit. Thick smoke could be seen coming from a government building where the fire started.

At least two people died in the attack, including a one-year-old child, and 11 others were hurt. Fires and damage to other buildings in the city, including residential flats, were also caused by falling drone parts and missile attacks. Emergency services are on the site and working.

Wider Context and Global Response

The airstrike on Sunday was the most recent in a string of Russian attacks against Kyiv. This is happening as peace discussions seem to be going nowhere. Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin disagreed on where to hold talks.

In the past, the world has condemned these kinds of actions, and leaders from the UK and the EU have called on Russian diplomats to convey their disapproval. Ukraine keeps asking the rest of the world to put additional pressure and sanctions on Moscow.
